'Win ugly' for Blues

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 09:22

Almondsbury 1

Wells City 2

Wells eventually overcame the stubborn resistance of Almondsbury and ran out winners of a poor encounter by the odd goal in three.

The contest rarely raised itself above mediocre, but a late strike by Martin Aaberg allowed City to maintain their winning streak.

However, Wells could have won by a far larger margin had they enjoyed a little more good fortune in and around the box. They had several chances to add to their tally and could have been awarded what looked like two certain penalties.

The home side deservedly took the lead on seven minutes when John Adam latched on to a mistake from Mike Charlton to fire an unstoppable drive into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Wells responded well, with Steve Osgood firing inches over with a blistering drive from just outside the box, while Billy Manning and Levi Marlow went close with two good efforts from close range.

With the break approaching, Wells had a touch of luck when a harmless cross from the left flank from Marlow drifted aimlessly over the outstretched arm of the home keeper and nestled in the back of the net.

The second period saw Wells raise their game, but the enterprise and flowing passing which saw them outplay promotion favourites Longwell Green last week, was sadly missing.

Kieran White worked like a Trojan up front, holding on to possession with good distribution, while Barry Sandquest also stood out down the right wing.

Wells thought they would be awarded a spot-kick on the hour when Manning was upended in the box after a darting run from inside his own half, but the official was unconvinced.

A similarly strong claim for a penalty kick fell on deaf ears when White appeared to be chopped down from behind, and the striker collected a yellow card for his over-zealous appeal.

A double substitution saw James Cinicola and Craig Rimmer introduced to the fray in place of Manning and Sam Andrews respectively, as Wells pushed for a winner.

The winning goal almost arrived on 80 minutes when a thunderous Marlow header from a Rimmer corner was miraculously headed off the goalline by an Almondsbury full-back on to the crossbar, and away to safety.

With minutes left on the clock, Wells eventually scored the winner when Aaberg, who had been pushed up front to play alongside White, rose above the melee and met another Rimmer corner with a fine header, much to the joy of the travelling Wells contingent in the small crowd.

Wells probably deserved the win as they were the side that showed the extra hunger and desire for victory, and their fitness allowed them to finish the game stronger.

Wells manager Tim Moxey said: "The game's not going to last long in the memory, but the important thing is that we won. I think they call it 'winning ugly'."
